Chefs sizzle at Hot Rocks Griller Challenge benefiting Denver Health

June 20, 2013

From The Denver Post: Anyone who thinks that sliders are no big deal — nothing more than itsy-bitsy hunks of ground beef on a bun — should have been at the 2013 Hot Rocks Griller Challenge.

There, on the patio outside Elway's Cherry Creek, 15 of Denver's top chefs fired up their grills, and their imaginations, to produce mini-morsels that were anything but ordinary for 1,000 hungry souls who sampled and then voted for their favorite.

Tyler Wiard and Aniedra Nichols from Elway's Cherry Creek won the People's Choice Award for their Korean BBQ bulgogi slider that was topped with house-made kimchi; Panzano's top toque, Elise Wiggins, didn't win, which was somewhat surprising considering that her wild boar agrodolce slider had plenty of folks coming back for seconds.

The chefs put down their spatulas and tongs long enough to sample each others' cooking and give awards of their own. Their favorite was Troy Guard's Godzilla Slider, which combined teriyaki, smoked Kewpie, tempura crispies and roasted mushrooms. The owner of TAG in Larimer Square also placed second in the People's Choice voting.
