Frontline workers and donors come together to support a mom who delivered her baby at Denver Health and then found out she had COVID-19.

In late March, Ruth delivered her newborn son at Denver Health and shortly after discovered she had COVID-19.

Even though she hadn’t had the opportunity to hold her child, she made the difficult decision to separate from her son, her five-year-old daughter, and her husband to keep them safe. She went on to spend the next month in Denver Health’s ICU, and was intubated for two weeks as she fought against the virus.

During that time, Ruth’s caregivers grew to connect with her and wanted to do something special for her and her family.

“We just decided one day, let’s adopt them as a family,” said Kenisha Karlsson, RN. “So we reached out to the Denver Health Foundation  and they donated clothes for the baby, diapers, wipes and clothing for their five-year-old daughter. We also got a great donation from Infamil (who provides formula to the hospital already) of five cases of formula. In addition, the staff members took up a cash collection of more than $300 to give the family a gift card to get groceries.”
