Denver Health Appoints Dr. Bill Burman as Interim CEO

April 21, 2016

Dr. Bill Burman, director of Denver Public Health, has been selected to serve as interim CEO of Denver Health and Hospital Authority (Denver Health), effective immediately, while the Board of Directors conducts a national search for a permanent CEO.

Dr. Burman has served Denver Health for 21 years, as physician executive and infectious disease specialist. Dr. Burman has served as director of Denver Public Health – a department of Denver Health that works collaboratively with Denver Environmental Health to provide public health services to the residents of Denver – since 2011. He also has served as president of the Denver Health medical staff since 2013. Dr. Burman will work closely with Dr. Arthur Gonzalez until his retirement at the end of June.

“Dr. Burman is ideally suited to continue Denver Health’s strategic direction while we perform a national search for a permanent CEO,” said Rus Heise, chair of the Board of Directors of Denver Health. “He has deep experience within the organization, a track record of successful executive leadership and personifies our mission to improve the health of all Denver residents.”

The selection follows the announcement last month that CEO Dr. Arthur Gonzalez would retire June 30 after successfully leading the organization through immense change over the past three years.

“I am honored to have the confidence of the Board and excited to be able to work across this large enterprise to continue our many efforts to improve the health of our community,” Dr. Burman said. “Denver Health is on the right path, thanks to its clear mission and Art’s leadership over the past three years.”

Dr. Judy Shlay, Associate Director of Denver Public Health, will assume Interim Director responsibilities.
