Your donation to the Denver School-Based Health Centers (SBHC) helps keep children - our community’s most precious resource -- healthy. Thanks to SBHC, children in Denver Public Schools, (DPS) who might otherwise have no health services, receive free and convenient care.
Located in 12 DPS schools, the SBHC program serves students from those schools as well as 18 satellite elementary schools within walking distance of the clinics. Through this effort, more than 35 percent of DPS students have access to care through a SBHC. Almost 90 percent of the students served are ethnic minorities, and 80 percent are from low-income families.
The SBHC staff consists of certified nurse practitioners, physician assistants, substance abuse counselors and mental health providers who specialize in the treatment of children and adolescents.
With parental consent, students can access health and mental health services at no cost. And because the clinics are located in the schools, students receive services without missing much class time, and parents do not have to take time off work.
In addition, SBHC plays a vital role in ensuring children receive regular physical examinations and immunizations that are often missed without health care coverage. They also provide care for students with chronic diseases like diabetes and asthma and promote preventive care and early intervention.
